Guide: how to select a micro switch for high-reliability applications
From electrical derating and mechanical life to environmental sealing and mounting tolerance — six key dimensions of micro switch selection.
Six key dimensions
1. Electrical derating
Resistive loads may use the full rating; inductive or motor loads should be derated to 40%–60% of rated current with arc suppression. Lamp loads can draw inrush over 10× the steady-state current.
2. Mechanical vs electrical life
Datasheet mechanical life is usually far higher than electrical life. Size against the electrical life under your actual load.
3. Ingress protection
IP40 suits dry indoor use; kitchen, bath, outdoor and automotive exterior mechanisms should use IP65 / IP67 — and confirm the cable and terminal area are sealed too.
4. Force and travel
Match operating force to available actuation force with a 1.5× margin, and allow for tolerance stack-up in the mechanism to avoid over-travel fatigue.
5. Temperature
Separate ambient from terminal temperature; in high-current applications terminal rise may exceed 30 K.
6. Approvals
If the end product needs UL / ENEC / CQC approval, confirm the switch itself carries the corresponding mark during selection — not at the certification stage.
